Celebrities ‘Speak Up For Kids’ Mental Health, Psychiatrist Urges Removing ’13 Reasons Why’ | TODAY

>>RIGHT.>>WE’RE ROOTING FOR THEM. THAT’S FOR SURE.>>THANK YOU.>>>IN THE MEANTIME, MONDAY MARKS THE START OF NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH. AND A NEW INITIATIVE, SPEAK UL FOR KIDS. WELL-KNOWN ATHLETES, ACTORS AND POLITICIANS ARE OPENING UP ABOUT THE PERSONAL STRUGGLES THEY HAVE FACED AND THEIR TRIUMPHS.>>I HAVE OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER AND A GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER. *>>I HAVE ADHD. *>>I HAVE DEPRESSION. *>>I HAD A TEACHER TELL ME THAT I WOULD NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING. AND I WOULD NEVER BE SUCCESSFUL.>>AND MICHAEL PHELPS IS GOING TO WIN GOLD.>>WHEN I WAS A KID, THIS WAS A CURE FOR DYSLEXIA. SMARTEN UP. SMARTEN UP. SMARTEN UP. THANK YOU, WELCOME TO “THE TONIGHT SHOW.”>>IT FEELS LIKE IT’S NEVER GOING TO END. AND IT DOES. OH, BOY. THANK YOU. WHAT I WOULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ABOUT HAVING ANXIETY IS THAT AS I’VE GOTTEN OLDER, I’VE LEARNED HOW TO MANAGE IT WITH SO MANY TOOLS THAT HAVE LED TO ME LIVING A PRETTY NORMAL AND EXCITING AND VIBRANT LIFE.>>I WOULD TELL MY INNER SELF TO SQUEEZE MY DOG TIGHTLY AND TO READ A BOOK AND TO MEDITATE AND TO BREATHE AND UNDERSTAND I’M NOT ALONE.>>SOMETIMES YOU FEEL SO DARK AND YOU ISOLATE. AND YOU QUESTION YOURSELF. AND YOU THINK, WHAT DID I DO TO FEEL LIKE THIS? IT’S A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE.>>HAVING ANXIETY MIGHT BE INDICATIVE OF OTHER BENEFICIAL, POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS.>>ONE GREAT THING ABOUT BEING DYSLEXIC, YOU TEND TO FOCUS LIKE A LASER BEAM. YOU FIND SOMETHING YOU CAN DO WELL, YOU GO RIGHT THERE TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL.>>I’M AN ACTOR, A COMEDIAN AND A JUDGE AND I GOT A LOT OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. SINCE I’VE SPOKEN OUT ABOUT IT, I HAVE COPING SKILLS AND I’M DOING WELL. DON’T BE QUIET. TELL PEOPLE.>>TALK TO YOUR MOTHER. TALK TO A TEACHER. TALK TO YOUR BEST FRIEND.>>ONCE I FOUND THAT IT WAS OKAY TO TALK TO SOMEBODY AND SEEK HELP, THAT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. AND NOW, I’M ABLE TO LIVE LIFE TO ITS FULLEST.>>DR. HERALD CAPOWICZ IS ALSO THE PRESIDENT OF THE CHILD MIND INSTITUTE. GOOD TO SEE YOU. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, IT’S REALLY ASTOUNDING. 17 MILLION CHILDREN IN OUR COUNTRY HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER. WHAT KINDS OF DISORDERS?>>WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THIS IS THE MOST COMMON ILLNESSES OF CHILDHOOD ADOLESCENCE. SOMEONE KNOWS AND LOVES THESE CHILDREN. IF IT’S NOT YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER, IT’S YOUR NIECE OR NEPHEW. IT’S AUTISM, ADHD, DEPRESSION, OBSESSIVE COMPULSION DISORDER. ALL PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS, OCCURS BEFORE AGE 4 AND BEFORE 14. THAT’S WHEN YOU SHOULD IDENTIFY AND TREAT IT. IF I HAVE A SYMPTOM FOR TEN YEARS, MUCH HARDER TO TREAT THAN A SYMPTOM THAT’S SIX MONTHS OLD.>>BACK TO THE NUMBERS — IS IT THAT THEY’VE INCREASED OR THAT WE’RE MORE AWARE OF THEM?>>WE’RE GETTING BETTER IDENTIFICATION. AND WE’RE STARTING TO DO MORE SCIENCE. THE MORE SCIENCE WE DO, THE MORE WE RECOGNIZE THAT IT’S ABOUT THE BRAIN AND NOT ABOUT YOUR PARENTING. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN GET ANGRY THAT YOUR PARENTS GAVE YOU BAD JEANS. BUT IT’S NOT THE WAY YOUR MOTHER WORKS OR DIDN’T WORK. OR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER GOT DIVORCED. IT’S THE FACT THAT CERTAIN KIDS ARE MORE VULNERABLE THAN OTHERS.>>LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NEWS. THE SERIES, “13 REASONS WHY.” A LOT OF YOUNG TEENS ARE WATCHING IT. IT’S PREMISED ON A TEEN’S SUICIDE. I KNOW YOU HAVE STRONG FEELINGS WHETHER TEENAGERS SHOULD BE WATCHING THIS OR ALL.>>90% OF ALL OF THE TEENAGERS WHO COMMIT SUICIDE HAVE A PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER. AND THAT’S 5,000 TEENAGERS THIS YEAR. AND 600,000, ONE EVERY 2 1/2 MINUTES, WILL MAKE AN ATTEMPT THAT LEADS TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THAT MEANS THAT THIS SHOW SHOULD BE PULLED OFF THE AIR IMMEDIATELY. TEENAGE SUICIDE IS CONTAGIOUS. WE KNOW FOR OVER THREE DECADES THAT WHEN KIDS WATCH TELEVISION WHERE THEY DEPICT A SUICIDE, THEY’RE MORE LIKELY TO ATTEMPT AND THEY’RE MORE LIKELY TO ACTUALLY SUICIDE. THE PROBLEM WITH “13 REASONS” IS THAT IT SHOWS YOU THAT WHEN YOU’RE IN TROUBLE AS A TEENAGER, THERE IS NO HELP, YOU’RE HOPELESS. AND THAT SUICIDE IS GLAMOROUS AND EFFECTIVE. THAT’S NOT THE MESSAGE WE WANT THEM TO HAVE. WE WANT THE MESSAGE THAT MY YOUNGER SELF GIVES. THESE ARE PROMINENT PEOPLE THAT SAY, WHEN I SPOKE UP, I GOT HELP, I CAN HAVE A GREAT LIFE.>>AND HOPEFULLY THE CELEBRITIES WHO TALK ABOUT IT, WILL HELP

  1. my family side has Mental health they have bipolar and my aunt has schizophrenia l have a son that is 27 years old he was diagnosed with autism mild retardation schizophrenia it's really hard having a son with mental health issues

  2. I am the product of abuse and developed bipolar type symptoms, I believe it was nurture that got me there. I am finally in a manageable place, it took me till my early 40's to get there and finally be able to say I like myself for the first time since I was a child. Now I speak about my experience and am writing a book and produce a tv show on my YouTube channel talking with other people and their experiences.

  3. Most Psychiatrists are BS artists. They just get you to regurgitate your own demons then categorize your problems telling you its gonna be okay. I have never met a person who goes to a psychiatrist who comes off better off after than before. Most of these people are oversensitive liberal text preachers. Im so tired of all of this regulate and ban everything, that is why the media is failing and NBC is poised for a complete decline in further decades.

  4. it romanticizes suicide, and can inspire copycats.

Hannah should have went to the police, told her parents, or talked to anyone.

Help is available, keep moving forward.

  5. Wait wow, what did i just hear this man say??? What about the bullying going on that can drive someone to suicide. My God, there are instagram pages or young girls slitting their wrists. Why is this not discussed? There are suicide pages on social media. Is that not "glamorizing" hurting yourself. I can go online and find these pages via social media easily. Do these older men and women not understand this is right under their children's faces. You do not need to watch this show to see this… I 100% disagree with this man. I am usually very open minded but my goodness I have never disagreed more.

  6. please learn what you are discussing. apparently the news media doesn't discuss it and then this series happen and boom its everything. learn your facts

  7. i don't know why some people are so freaked out when they feel bad, don't get yourself confused for feeling sorry for Hannah and or having compassion or sympathy, that feeling is not a bad thing, i think in this way the Psychiatrist's that are making a fuss about this show,is really really worried saying that everyone should be careful watching this, is because some people just don't know what to do with what they feel or how to handle it,, resulting in thinking negative things being critical and judgemental. Having enough self-respect and self-love is true to get through some stuff even something like, "just a show".
To be honest i relate to the show, but i passed through all the sh*t that happened to me that's why it's important for people to know ,for me, how it feels like to be in that place, i want people to understand how some very sensitive, open people feels and how some who chose to be bad can affect us. I still think that it's important to take responsibility for what they do or they did; we "all" should. I want the show to continue i hope in Season 2 of this show they give what the other half of the group wants to show and what Depression is… we already know what Hannah went through i think that is enough.

  8. I agree a little with him but the thing is is that not all teens see help because not everyone wants to help if that makes sense did anyone get that ???🤔

  9. Im 12 I have dyslexia my teachers don't care.today my teacher got mad at me because of my grade on my test and thought I was not trying but I…cant read or focus it seems like no one cares. Also I had cancer what I was five so I now what pain is I know you can change.but I can't.help me please

  10. I have Dyspraxia that hard mental health do not believe teacher anything you can in Secondary school and college so much friendly as teachers

  11. So I guess they should remove game of thrones because it romanticizes sleeping with sibling and killing off entire families. They should remove breaking bad because it only shows someone dying making a ton of money from drugs. I'm 30 and throughly enjoyed this show. I was bullied all through school. I was weird I didn't wear the best cloths and all that. The show doesn't show suicide as this great thing. It shows how someone can feel so alone and depressed yet no one knew.

  12. I'm failing school because of ADD it's make me deppressed and my teacher assumes I'm playing they don't understand

  13. My school "counselor" sent me to the hospital in 8th grade for telling her I wanted to commit suicide instead of trying to help me through it. A lady there asked me "Are you gonna do it now?" I said no and they let me go at 8pm. ://
Then last year I actually tried to get hit by a car BECAUSE I was suicidal. BECAUSE I was being bullied. I even told my new counselor about it and she didn't even call 211 (suicide prevention line) OR try to do anything about the bullying situation.

  14. This is so ridiculous! The show gives people a blunt image of bullying and suicide. Nothing in there promotes it. It shows how painful and sad it is when a person decides to end her life and also what triggers people to do so. It rather makes us think about our actions and how we behave towards other people because if there's one thing you can learn from this show then it's that bullying is no joke and suicide should never be an option to this serious problem

  15. So we're supposed to censor all entertainment for the few people that are suicidal? It was an entertaining show, and that's all it was meant for. It's not a manual on how to deal with a mental disorder.

  16. First, it's not even on the air. It's on an internet streaming service, with Netflix, anything goes.

Second, season two will be coming out whether you like it or not. This show ain't anywhere.
    #IStandBy13ReasonsWhy

  17. i think that when mental illness is properly portrayed in movies and shows it is totally fine and can actually bring light to issues like these
sadly there is always going to be people who glorify and want it

  18. Well maybe if psychritst did they jobs properly people would be not so I'll chemical imbalance is bulshit
