Twain’s celebrity pull

Twain’s celebrity pull

An orphan asylum writes him and asks him for a contribution and he writes back and says, you know, words are nothing, it’s deeds that make the difference. So I am willing to be one of a thousand citizens who can contribute two or more of their children to this enterprise. And people say, well, is he being cheap? No. He knows what they’ll do with it, they’ll sell it. And you see by the time he writes “Huck,” he’s probably the most famous writer in the English language. I mean writer of fiction, writer of literature. I mean even more than Dickens or anybody like that. Just amazing.
